Foton the right choice for north coast traffic control company
Foton Trucks will be playing an important role in the upgrading of the Pacific Highway with a leading North Coast based traffic control and labour hire company purchasing four new Fotons for use on the vital Port Macquarie to Kempsey section of the new highway.
Men At Work is based in Port Macquarie and after recently winning a contract to handle traffic control in and around the of a 37 km section of the highway, it purchased one new Foton 45.110 SWB narrow cab and placed orders for another three Fotons which are set to be delivered soon.
Principal of Men at Work, David Bagini says the decision to purchase Foton was made for a number of reasons including price, customer service and the Cummins SCR equipped engines. “The initial factor was price, which was very, very good but the use of SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) in the Cummins engine was another major attraction because we have found the EGR (exhaust gas recycling) pollution systems used on most Japanese trucks have problems in hot weather and when idling for long periods of time,” said David.
“Our traffic control trucks spend a lot of time idling so that we can run the powered Variable Messaging Signs ( VMS) they carry on board and it can get fairly hot up here on the north coast so the SCR is a much better option,” he added.
“We also had problems with the level of service from some of the dealers from the other truck brands so when Ross from Port Foton approached us with the proposal to purchase Foton we thought we would give it a try.”
“The Foton worked very well and so based on that when we picked up the three year contract on the Pacific Highway upgrade we decided to buy three more, choosing the wide cab models to give a bit more room for our operators and chose the medium wheel base option to carry more equipment.”
The Pacific Highway contract will mean the trucks are on the road every day ensuring motorists travelling through the work zones are aware of the hazards ahead and slowing traffic to make the area safer for construction workers and motorists alike.
‘It is very constant work, the trucks are out there all day every day and while they don’t travel huge distances they are running all day and carry a fair load with all the equipment they lug,” said David Begini.
‘The driver of the original Foton loves the truck and reckons it works very well so that obviously was another factor in us ordering the three new Fotons,” he added.
The company currently runs a fleet of 16 light duty trucks, the majority of which are Japanese brands, however with the addition of the three new Fotons this will grow to 19 when the 3.8 litre Cummins engined wide-cab trucks arrive in the coming weeks.
The construction of the new dual carriageway highway from the Oxley Highway interchange near Port Macquarie to Kundebung south of Kempsey, which started recently, will take three years and will include two new dual bridges over the Hastings and Wilson Rivers eradicating some of the infamous highway’s worst blackspots.
Men at Work’s 45.110 like all Foton light trucks is powered by an Internationally recognised Cummins engine with 110kW of power and a whopping 360Nm of torque while the larger 65.115 Foton wide cab models use the larger Cummins 3.8L ISF turbo diesel with 115kW of power and a massive 500Nm of torque. Both are mated to a ZF five speed manual gearbox, which make them easy to drive as well as being fuel efficient and good for the environment.
